CWA celebrate International Women’s Day

By Yarrawonga Chronicle

Yarrawonga/Border Branch of Country Women’s Association of Victoria hosted a breakfast to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) on Saturday, March 2.

CWA Branch President Jennie Hammon cheerfully welcomed Moira Shire Councillor Marie Martin, guest speaker GRDC Southern Regional Panel member Fiona Marshall, Lioness Club, Probus Ladies, Corowa and Yarrawonga/Border CWA members and guests.

The CWA Grace was said, and breakfast then served.

Jennie then introduced guest speaker Fiona Marshall.

Fiona started by telling the audience she is from a non- farming background and now lives and works on a dryland farm in Mulwala with husband Craig.

She studied Applied Biology at RMIT and then a Graduate Diploma in Education at The University of Melbourne.

Fiona is a committee member of Riverine Plains Farming Group and is currently serving as a member of the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) Southern Regional Panel.

In keeping with the IWD theme, “Balance for Better” Fiona said she is proud to be 1 of 3 women on the Southern Regional Panel.

The southern region covers south-eastern Australia including Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia.

Fiona believes the gender gap is closing in agriculture.

Larger agricultural organisations are actively closing the gap on gender balance.

Fiona has taken as many agricultural learning opportunities as possible and began Agri Business learning in earnest when GST was introduced.

When attending Ag-Chat groups she learnt the value of good farm business and her value within her farming business.

Fiona continues to update her agribusiness skills wherever possible.

Fiona believes strong relationships and a good network of friends are important elements of life.  Question time followed.

President Jennie thanked Fiona for sharing her story.

The morning concluded with tea and coffee being served.

Proceeds from the breakfast will go to “National Centre for Farmers Health”.
