Heathcote bowls

HEATHCOTE Bowling Club’s division three side has been bundled out of the Bendigo Bowls Division finals, after losing on Saturday to Golden Square.

Heathcote travelled to East Bendigo to play Golden Square in an elimination final in hot conditions.

The visitors made a good start and after 10 ends led by 15 shots.

Heathcote held a 14-shot lead at the halfway mark and maintained the lead until the 20th end.

However, Heathcote struggled over the final ends and went down by 14 shots.

While disappointed with the result, Heathcote bowlers were pleased to be able to compete with the bigger Bendigo clubs despite having limited resources.

Heathcote 86 lost to Golden Square 100

Greg Speirs 31 defeated P Bush 18; Brian Taylor 20 lost to J Frost 23; Bill Gardiner 15 lost to G Kronk 40; John McGillivray 21 defeated D Condon 19.

Greg Speirs’ rink won the first two ends and led by 10 shots after eight ends. Greg’s rink continued to dominate, leading by 14 shots after 18 ends and went on to win by 13 shots.

Brian Taylor’s team made an even start with scores level on 13th end. The scores were again level on the 22nd end but Brian’s team lost four of the last five ends to go down by three shots.

Bill Gardiner’s rink made a poor start, losing six shots on the first end. Despite their best efforts the team struggled all day and were defeated by 25 shots.

John McGillivray’s team made a good start and led by 10 shots by the 14th end. The team then struggled, winning only three more ends, however, after winning the last end the team claimed victory by a single shot.
