MND was the winner

TWO Heathcote sporting clubs combined to raise money for a worthy cause at the weekend.

Organised by the Never Give Up Group, the hidden skills day aimed to raise funds and awareness for MND.

Many were out of their element as golfers hit the bowling green and bowlers picked up a golf club and some were trying both for the first time.

No skills were required on the day, just a willingness to give things a go and a desire to raise as much money as possible.

The final fundraising tally is still being calculated but there is already talk of making the day a regular event due to its popularity and success, attendee Barry Cail said.

“It wasn’t easy for the bowlers playing golf and the golfers playing bowls and it was even more interesting for those who had little experience in either sport,” he said.

“But in the end there was a significant amount of money raised and a whole lot of fun for everyone.

“And the Never Give Up group is already planning its annual Australia Day fundraiser, which promises to be a huge event. Keep a look out for more information about that.”

The Never Give Up Group has gained momentum in the past year, working tirelessly to raise awareness around a disease that affects so many Australians.

“The group has been building really well lately,” group member Peter Cunningham said.

“I guess sometimes you look at the TV and see the Big Freeze on the AFL for example and think, wow they just raised $2 million and we can only raise a fraction of that.

“But our motto here is: any money we raise is money MND didn’t have yesterday.”
