SES puts out call

By Vanessa Wiltshire

THE Heathcote SES Unit is searching for new recruits. Could it be you?

If you are active and community minded, member Mel Thompson invites you to come along to a Thursday evening session and see what it’s all about.

“We’re a friendly and supportive bunch, a bit like a second family,” she said. “This is one of the main reasons I got involved. I’ve been in the SES elsewhere, but when I moved to the district, I wanted to meet new people. This has been a fantastic way of getting in to the community and I highly recommend it.”

The Heathcote SES covers a large area: Rochester to Axedale to Tooborac, Kyneton, Redesdale, Mia Mia, Argyle and Costerfield.

“People can be hesitant because they are worried about the time commitment or attending a road accident,” Mel said.

“But we are looking for all kinds of people.

‘‘While there is full training and support, you don’t have to do anything you don’t feel comfortable with.’’

Members meet on Thursday evenings for two hours at the SES unit, opposite the netball courts at 3-7 Wright St.

While the unit is looking for people who have some level of fitness and are available during the day, Mel said anyone who is interested should get in touch.

“We particularly invite parents or people who are home during the day to come down and have a chat,” she said.

“The SES is incredibly varied. We help in so many ways, including storm and flood recovery.

“There’s also admin support and media or community liaison. Our training is accredited, so that can help people professionally. We send people on a variety of courses including first aid, four-wheel driving, chainsaw handling and OHS.”
