Bank backs students

HEATHCOTE and district students will again benefit from a scholarship program that will supplement their study costs in their first year of higher education.

Heathcote and District Community Bank Branch manager Michael Prowse said the scholarship program was launched because the branch believed local students deserved a fair chance to achieve their dreams.

“We know an investment in their education will help young people gain access to tertiary education and will yield great returns to the student, their families and the local community,’’ he said.

“Ultimately, we want to be part of a system that transforms the lives of local students, so we’re committed to creating pathways to allow that opportunity. Were also very excited to announce that students attending TAFE will now be eligible for the scholarship where in the past it has only been open to those attending university.”

Successful applicants will initially receive $3,000 funding for one year and depending on academic performance, the scholarship may be renewed to assist in the second year of their study.

Last year, the scholarship was awarded to Mia Mia resident Thomas Bennett. Thomas spent 2018 at the University of Melbourne where he is studying a Bachelor of Science and was grateful for the financial assistance that the scholarship provided.

Thomas used his scholarship funds for accommodation and textbook expenses for his course and is enjoying the challenges that university presents.

Mr Prowse added: “It’s because of our customers that we were able to run programs like this; without their support the funds wouldn’t be available.

‘‘We’re really impressed with everything Thomas has achieved in 2018 and our customers can feel proud that they’ve played a part in assisting him.”

Applications are invited from eligible students, who are starting their studies in 2019.

Applications close on January 29 and will be assessed in early February. Applicants must reside in Heathcote or the surrounding district.
