IF CRAIG Guy has his way, Heathcote will have an off-leash dog park.

All he needs is your help.

He has a block of land on Depot Rd and a plan to breathe life into what is currently a drainage channel and dam with a few trees on it.

“It’s about three acres with room for parking along the road so it’s perfect,” he said.

“The plan most likely would be to tidy it up but still have it as a drain – nothing really could be done with this block anyway – and the trees on the block have come along really well.

“Then we’d have a sand path around the edge and keep the dam looking good. It could be a pretty picturesque place when it’s tidied up.”

With the ‘all clear’ from City of Greater Bendigo, now all he needs to do is rally the troops in town.

“It’s not a budget item for council. To put it all together it’s as simple as getting a water tap, tidying the place up and putting a fence around it all,” he said.

“I’m looking to get people who are interested and responsible dog owners in the area on board to gauge interest — it’ll be a club of people.”

“I’ve already got two sponsors on board but I need people to register their interest.”

And as for how the idea came about, Craig said he was looking for something to improve the look of the block and provide something for locals to use.

“A lot of people are looking for a place for their dogs to run around and many head into Bendigo to the Crook St park, but imagine if we had somewhere locally instead,” he said.

“Council basically said to me it’s your baby so make it happen — hopefully it’s something we can get started on very shortly. I’m glad they’ve jumped on it.

“Nothing’s ever going to happen here so it’s a good place to have it and people can either drive here and park or can just walk up from town.

“The path will be about 1.3km around the edge. It’ll be a nice, easy track for people and be really accessible to everyone. I hope people would treat it as their own and respect it.”
