HEATHCOTE locals have been reminded of ladder safety with recent figures released by the Victorian Injury Surveillance unit showing 58 per cent of ‘do it yourself’ (DIY) injuries in the Greater Bendigo region over the past two years were from ladder falls.
Worryingly, 67 per cent of those injured in DIY injuries were over the age of 65, and 75 per cent were males.
Fractures were the main injuries with 42 per cent, and 29 per cent of patients were admitted to hospital with open wounds.
These statistics follow on from the national campaign ‘ladder safety matters’ — encouraging older men to stop and think before they attempt to use a ladder at home.
The campaign started after research showed in one year in Australia, 1,668 people aged 65 years and over were hospitalised because they fell from a ladder.
So think twice before attempting any DIY projects at home, and be as safe as possible.
