HEATHCOTE police may soon be wearing body cameras as part of their uniform.
The plan is for 11,000 Victorian officers to be wearing the cameras by 2020, with the first 200 cameras to be rolled out this year.
The cameras — which are already in use in Queensland and New South Wales — will be first used by officers in Ballarat and Epping before expanding throughout the state. The cameras could provide key real-time video evidence to be used in prosecution.
The introduction of the cameras follows new laws that were passed in August 2017 to ensure police officers could wear them.
No time frame has been set for when the Heathcote Police will receive their cameras.
