CFA douses vineyard blaze

TWENTY-three CFA vehicles and two helicopters responded to a grassfire in Mount Camel that burned about 40 hectares of a vineyard and surrounding paddocks.

At 5pm on February 1, brigades were called out to a fire that is believed to have been started by a tractor slashing grass around grapevines.

“There were a significant number of brigades called because of the nature of the terrain and a strong wind from the south, which meant there was potential for the fire to spread rapidly,” Heathcote CFA captain Carl Watkins said.

The brigade would like to extend its thanks to the Heathcote Bowls Club who took on the mammoth task of feeding the 120 firefighters who attended the blaze.
