THE Northern Hwy is in chaos this evening as wild storms lash roads and strong winds have felled trees blocking traffic.
Traffic is banked up between the Toolleen Hotel and Elmore while SES crews work to remove fallen trees.
One woman trying to get home to Moama and is caught in the traffic jam said the weather had been appalling since leaving Melbourne a few hours ago.
“At Kilmore we had to stop the rain was so heavy, and there were trees, branches and rubbish flying everywhere,” she said.
“No sooner had we turned onto the highway after passing through Heathcote than we have had to stop – there are trucks and cars banked up all over the place.
“And no-one can tell us how long this will take.”
Rain hit Echuca-Moama about 5.30pm – with thunder and lightning – and is getting heavier by the minute.
