Bill Gardiner and Lorraine Speirs are the new Heathcote Bowling Club champions.

BILL Gardiner and Lorraine Speirs are the Heathcote Bowling Club champions after winning the men’s and ladies’ finals respectively on Sunday.

In warm conditions, the Singles Club Championships were held in front a large crowd of interested spectators.

The ladies championship was contested by Speirs and Chris Cail.

The game started evenly with only two shots the difference after six ends.

Speirs then won six of the next eight ends to open up a handy lead. She kept up the pressure and went on to take out the championship title.

The men’s championship saw Gardiner face off against Glen Wilkie.

The game started as evenly as the ladies, with only a shot the difference after six ends.

Gardiner won the subsequent six ends and after 22 ends he was able to claim the club championship title.

The Heathcote Bowling would like to congratulate Lorraine Speirs and Bill Gardiner on being the Club Singles Champions for 2017-2018.

Weekend Pennant:

Division three:

Division 3 played top team Golden Square at Heathcote and recorded an 18 shot win with all rinks having victories. Heathcote are now in third spot on the ladder and are only seven points from the top spot.

John McGillivray 27 defeated J Frost 18

Brian Taylor 27 defeated S Egan 24

Greg Speirs 26 defeated P Bush 22

Bill Gardiner 27 defeated G Cronk 25.

John McGillivray’s team led by one shot at the 12th end. John’s team maintained the pressure, winning the last two ends to record a nine-shot win.

Brian Taylor’s team was locked in a close contest but thanks to winning the final three ends, Brian’s team finished three shots ahead.

Greg Speirs’ team made a great start, winning the first five ends to lead by 13 shots. Despite losing the last three ends, the team held on to win by four shots.

Bill Gardiner’s team led by nine shots after 11 ends and despite losing the last end won by two shots.

Division six:

Division six travelled to Woodbury and was soundly defeated by 40 shots.

Rae Craig 13 lost to B Shay 30, Denise Anderson 14 lost to B Brown 28, Chris Cail 15 lost to J Davison 23, Basil Kapoulitsa 24 lost to B Hickey 25.

Rae Craig’s stated slowly and trailed by 10 shots after 12 ends. Rae’s team only won five more ends to go down by 17 shots.

Denise Anderson’s team trailed by 12 shots by the 11th end, ultimately losing by 14 shots.

Chris Cail’s team struggled early and was down by 15 shots after 13 ends. Although Chris’s team lifted it was unable to overcome the strong lead amassed by the opposing team and lost by eight shots overall.

Basil Kapoulitsa’s team made an even start with scores level on the 13th end. The game remained close but despite winning the last two ends, Basil’s team went down by just a single shot.

Midweek Results:

Heathcote 61 lost to Inglewood 67

Eileen O’Brien 19 lost to B Taig 21, Chris Cail 25 defeated L Rowley 20, Denise Anderson 17 lostto B Jones 26.

Eileen O’Brien’s team started well to lead by eight shots after 11 ends but then struggled and despite winning the last end went down by two shots.

Chris Cail’s team made and even start before taking control to lead by seven shots after 17 ends and held on to win by five shots.

Denise Anderson’s team won the first three ends and led by five shots after 15 ends. Unfortunately, things went downhill from there, with Denise’s team only winning three more ends to lose by nine shots.

Social Bowls:

On Wednesday, 12 bowlers enjoyed three games of pairs in warm conditions. At the end of the day four teams had managed to win two games and lose one. On the points system the winners were Dot Cutajar (s) and Basil Kapoulitsa (two wins, 33 points, +12 shots). Runners-up were Sharon Arnold (s) and Ken Reader (two wins, 32 points, +4 shots) from Brian Taylor (s) and Judy McDonald (two wins, 31 points, -2 shots). The jackpot was not won and will be $200 today.
