FEDERAL Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters has congratulated the Heathcote Community Pool Committee on receiving a $20,000 grant from the federal government’s Stronger Communities Program.

The money will be used to purchase a permanent shade structure for the toddlers’ pool, providing much-needed protection from the afternoon sun.

Heathcote’s pool is one of 13 organisations that have received a total of $150,000 through the program to be put towards $536,250 worth of community-based projects.

Ms Chesters said the project was an extremely worthy recipient of the grant.

“I commend the hard work of the Heathcote Community Pool Committee on their excellent and innovative application,’’ she said.

“This project will allow toddlers to swim in summer and not be exposed to the strong afternoon sun. It will also entice new parents to bring their children to Heathcote community pool and begin early swimming lessons.

“Heathcote Community Pool currently provides swimming lessons, aqua aerobics classes and school visits, so capital work projects like this one are crucial to continue to bring more community members.’’

Ms Chesters said the project will improve local community participation, cohesion and contribute to Heathcote’s vibrant community life.

“Liz Spillane and the Heathcote Community Pool Committee do a great job in exploring new options to keep improving the pool facilities that truly continues to build on the strong community in Heathcote,’’ she said.

“It’s vital that our government demonstrates strong commitment to supporting regional infrastructure, programs and events.”

The Stronger Communities Program funds small capital projects in local communities that will deliver social benefits.
