HEATHCOTE and district students will again benefit from a scholarship program that will supplement their study costs in their first year of higher education.

Heathcote and District Community Bank branch manager Michael Prowse said the scholarship program was launched because the branch believed local students deserved a fair chance to achieve their dreams.

“We know an investment in their education will help young people gain access to tertiary education and will yield great returns to the student, their families and the local community,’’ Mr Prowse said.

“Ultimately, we want to be part of a system that transforms the lives of local students, so we’re committed to creating pathways to allow that opportunity.

‘‘We’re also very excited to announce that students attending TAFE will now be eligible for the scholarship, where in the past it had only been open to those attending university.”

Successful applicants will initially receive $3,000 in funding for one year and, depending on academic performance, the scholarship may be renewed to assist in the second year of study.

Last year, the scholarship was awarded to Costerfield resident Nicolas Tobin.

Nic has spent 2017 at RMIT where he is studying an associate degree in engineering technology and was grateful for the financial assistance that the scholarship provided.

Nic used his scholarship funds to purchase a new laptop and text books for his course.

“The money has helped alleviate some of the financial pressures of living away from home and has allowed me to concentrate solely on my studies,” he said.

Mr Prowse said the scholarship is made possible by community support.

“It’s because of our customers that we’re able to run programs like this; without their support the funds wouldn’t be available,’’ he said.

‘‘We’re really impressed with everything Nic has achieved in 2017 and our customers can feel proud that they’ve played a part in assisting him”.

Applications are invited from eligible Heathcote and district students starting their studies in 2018.

Applications open December 1 and close on January 29, 2018 and will be assessed in early February 2018.
