State bye paves way for club championships

ALL state pennant bowls have a bye this week due to the Victorian Open Championships.

More than 1000 bowlers will compete in the championships from Saturday to Friday in Shepparton.

With no play this week, Heathcote bowlers have been completing the preliminary rounds of the men’s and ladies’ singles championships.

The men’s championship is down to the last eight — Bill Gardiner vs Grant Baker; Rod Hanson vs Brian Taylor; Glen Wilkie vs Basil Kapoulitsa; and Vin Keogh vs Smokey Dawson.

The ladies’ championship is down to the last four — Chris Cail vs Rae Craig and Lorraine Speirs vs Ilona Hutterer.

Pennant Bowls:

On Saturday, pennant bowls resumes with Heathcote’s division three team travelling to Harcourt.

Harcourt is fourth and Heathcote second, only one point behind top side Castlemaine.

Heathcote must win to stay in the top four.

Division six travels to White Hills needing a win over sixth placed White Hills to stay in touch with the four.

Heathcote travels to play sixth place Kangaroo Flat needing to win to go back into the four.

Social Bowls:

On Wednesday in fine conditions only eight bowlers played three games of pairs.

The winners were Smokey Dawson (s) and Ellis Knight (three wins, 45 points, +17 shots).

Runners-up were Bill Gardiner (s) and Brian Taylor (two wins, 33 points, +8 shots).

In fine and warm conditions on Saturday, 12 bowlers played three games of pairs.

The winners were Barry Cail (s) and Lex Tattersall (three wins, 46 points, +14 shots).

Runners-up were Greg Speirs (s) and Ellis Knight (two wins, 33 points, +11 shots) from Smokey Dawson (s) and Lorraine Speirs (two wins, 32 points, + 8 shots).

The jackpot was not won and will be $200 today.
