HERE is your chance to cut down the amount of waste going into your household bin, with Mitchell Shire Council offering a rebate of up to 50 per cent on compost bins and worm farms at selected local traders in September.
The subsidy gives residents a low-cost opportunity to introduce composting and worm farming into their recycling routines.
Mitchell Shire mayor Rhonda Sanderson said if every resident in the shire recycled their kitchen scraps and garden waste, the amount of material going to landfill would reduce by at least 40 per cent.
“As well as reducing the amount of waste that enters our landfills, you’re left with the fantastic compost,” she said.
The rebate is limited to one compost bin or one worm farm per household in Mitchell Shire. Subsided compost bins or worm farms can be purchased from:
• Broadford Timber and Hardware
• Kilmore Timber and Hardware
• Mitre 10 Wallan
• Pretty Sally Home and Garden
• Seymour Timber and Hardware
Residents can claim their rebate by collecting a voucher from the retailers, council’s customer service centres or www.mitchellshire.vic.gov.au and emailing or posting it back with their receipt.
