POLICE have arrested a man over the theft of firewood in Heathcote yesterday morning.

It is believed a man attended a farm on Sharpes Lane about 10am and stole a quantity of firewood.

There have been a number of thefts from the farm over the past couple of months, with about $2400 worth of firewood stolen.

A 42-year-old Romsey man was arrested and interviewed by police yesterday.

He is expected to be charged on summons.

Central Victoria Agricultural liaison officer Leading Senior Constable Dan O’Bree said investigating these kinds of rural incidents was a priority for police.

‘‘We know that farming properties and residences are viewed by criminals as easy targets because they can be very remote,’’ Snr Constable O’Bree said.

‘‘Security measures, such as installing cameras in isolated areas of rural properties, can be both a deterrent and a useful tool in helping to identify offenders.

‘‘It’s important that police work together with the farming community to reduce these incidents of theft and burglary as we know the impact they can have on their livelihoods.’’
