‘Republicans’ make most of royal weekend

The food and wine went down a treat at the Shiraz Republic for the 2017 Heathcote on Show Festival.

THE SHIRAZ Republic was a hive of activity on the Queen’s Birthday weekend.

The weather couldn’t have been better for the winery to show itself off for the Heathcote on Show Festival.

There was an American barbecue, rent-a-row racking and pruning, an outdoor pool table, live music, the 2015 vintage launch, two huge fires and plenty of beer and wine.

Winemaker Spencer Page said busy weekends like Heathcote on Show allowed the winery to tweak its setting.

“This year we added lots of picnic tables, an outdoor pool and an excellent food stall run by our friends Rob and Effie from Prologue Coffee Roasters,” he said.

“They provided their amazing coffee, as well as a delicious American barbecue of pulled pork and smoked brisket in brioche buns and Vegemite macaroni and cheese.”

Mr Page said there was plenty for people to do and plenty of foot traffic at the Shiraz Republic over the weekend, with shuttle buses, a coach and a stretch Hummer getting people to and from the venue.

“We launched our 2015 vintage, which was a hit with our guests over the three days,” he said.

“In the week leading up to Heathcote on Show, 15 tasting pallets were crafted for our new craft beer ponies, and these were popular all weekend – with around 100 sold and a lot of beer tasted.

“Many of our rent-a-row citizens attended a pruning workshop, as well as racking their wines into fresh demijohns (narrow-necked bottles) and adding French oak dominoes to their wine.”
